Reverend Dr. Gregory E. Bryant, Pastor

Meet The Staff

Our Session’s Moderator, and the Head of Staff, is the Reverend Dr. Gregory E. Bryant. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Chicago. After a conversion to Christ, in his late teens, Reverend Bryant answered the call to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. He has served congregations in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit. He has also served various parachurch organizations, community boards, task forces, and committees related to community safety, and racial diversity and reconciliation. He has been workshop leader for several denominations’ ministerial retreats and has led plenary sessions in various ecumenical settings. His workshops have dealt with such topics as Youth Ministry in the Black Church, Racial Reconciliation in the Church, the Place and Practice of Black Liberation Theology, and the History and Practice of Social Justice Preaching.

Reverend Bryant has published two books entitled, The American Church in Black and White: Navigating Minefields to become Gods’ Intercultural Community (2016, AuthorHouse Books), and Like Roses Rising From Concrete: 52 Pastoral Reflections on Christ, the Black Church, and Urban Culture (2018, also published by AuthorHouse Books).

He is a graduate of Jarvis Christian University, in Hawkins, Texas; the Christian Theological Seminary, in Indianapolis; and the Ecumenical Theological Seminary, in Detroit, MI, where he earned his Doctor of Ministry. His dissertation is entitled, The Philosophy of Sankofa: A Gift of Transformation for the Black Church and Community. The focus of his work centered on how the Akan people of Ghana evinced a culturally rooted, history-informed philosophy, which if put into practice, has immense value for Black Christians and racially diverse communities today. Dr. Bryant is currently a third-year PhD student at Wayne State University, where he is completing work in the School of Education’s Curriculum and Critical Social Inquiry program. He is investigating the history of urban education, and myriad sociological, political, race and class factors that impact what is taught in schools (and not taught), and how instruction and power dynamics play out in U.S. classrooms. His dissertation work will investigate the ways that Afrocentric curricula can be successfully implemented in schools that embrace a multicultural education. Additionally, the question of where do concepts of God and spirit fit in such curricula, given that notions of Spirit/the Divine play a critical dimension in African-centered learning,

Reverend Bryant is an ordained Presbyterian minister, in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and has been ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It is his joy to serve the people of the Calvary Presbyterian Church and the city of Detroit. Dr. Bryant believes that Calvary Presbyterian is a small, growing and vibrant congregation. It is a community growing in numbers and faith. He often says that the congregation has an undeniable passion to bless its surrounding neighborhood community, through food help, culturally relevant events, summer programs for children, and dynamic revivals and community conversations.

Reading, listening to various genres of music, artwork, cars, politics, watching old movies, and watching basketball and football are his additional interests. He is the father of three adult children: Gregory, Isaiah, and Christiana. He is the grandfather of grandson, Khristian Bryant. One of Reverend Bryant’s favorite scriptures is Matthew 11:28-30.

The Presbyterian Women in Calvary (PWC) is a virtual organization within Calvary Presbyterian. All women in Calvary are invited to participate in the PWC. We discuss our service to Calvary and in the community and our mission in the Presbytery of Detroit.

Our purpose is to educate, equip, and empower youth and adults to understand the Christian faith, study the Bible, and apply biblical principles to daily life through instruction, fellowship, and outreach. We continue to have adult Sunday School, are available for Children/teen Sunday School, and Wednesday Bible study, both afternoon and evening.
